I spent 4 years as a full time farmer of fruits, veggies, and herbs. Many factors conspired to force my semi retirement and I am currently living in town and back to my contsruction job. My wife runs a soap company that is my sole customer for herbs and we continue to improve our country property in hopes of making it economically sustainable for agriculture in the coming years.
Favorite Crops & Least Favorite Crops
Ive mainly shifted to perennials, especially tree crops, although squash and beans will always have a place in my heart and gardens. Medicinal herbs play a big part in my plantings. I try to focus on hardy, naturalizing species, but I always end up planting the most unusual things I can find.
Really big field (5+ acres)
niobrara chalk is our predominant subsoil, mildly alkaline. Managed, intensive grazing of multiple species of livestock has greatly improved our OM over the last several years.
